Shingle Style

Updated: Dec 14, 2022

Riverside Design and Build, LLC are recognized as award-winning experts in the art of shingle style design and construction. As you can see from the examples below, we know how to get the details right to deliver all the charm of shingle style while simultaneously delivering bright open, and modern interiors with excellent flow.

Sun Filled Picturesque has a winding driveway that leads to a picturesque shingle style house with loads of privacy and long views. Historical references to architectural masterpieces by Lutyens, McKim Mead and White, and classic Connecticut colonial architecture give this house a charming presence with echoes of yesterday and large open spaces of today’s lifestyle. Our own custom details resonate throughout the house. Crown mouldings, fireplace surrounds, cabinetry, and stonework were all carefully researched and designed by consulting architect Michele Rudolph. Details such as an alabaster resin skylight, antiqued mirror, marble mosaic, and many references to Connecticut’s rich architectural history abound in this house, which won a prestigious HOBI award for our company.

Westchester Classic is situated on the property of extraordinary natural beauty, this new custom passive solar home is remarkable for seamlessly integrating the house with the landscape. Large boulders, sourced from the property, link the main entry and wrap around the porch with a level lawn.

Large windows in the primary living spaces look out toward a massive rocky ravine. Riverside Design and Build, LLC was inspired to create a 50-foot recirculating waterfall in the ravine. The sight and sound of water gives enormous pleasure from the great room, master bedroom suite, kitchen, and extensive terraces along the southern side of the house. The waterfall’s soothing sound can be heard from the entire house and property.

For an idyllic property, Pound Ridge Rustic, we sited this house to preserve the character of the surrounding natural wooded beauty. We sought to create an interaction between the local landscape, views, and interior spaces that could be enjoyed throughout each season. The house is oriented for both passive solar design as well as for optimal views. Large windows frame views and encourage cross breezes for summer evenings. Indoor rooms flow into adjacent outdoor spaces that are carefully landscaped to integrate local materials and indigenous plantings.

A walk out lower level for entertaining segues onto a landscaped stone terrace. An outdoor fireplace, built from stone gathered from the property, and hot tub give winter entertaining another dimension. A seventy five-foot pool and garden is a private sanctuary for the family and their friends. In addition to our Design and Build work, Michele is pleased to have had the opportunity to provide award winning interior design services for this project.
